Chapter 15
Nearly out the door when the phone rang, Cricket considered ignoring it. Her feet hurt, her family waited on the sidewalk, and she wanted to shut down for the day.
Instead, she grabbed the phone. “Hello, Enchanted Florist. How may I help you?”
“How’d the rest of today go?” Jenni Beth’s soft drawl greeted her over the line.
“Oh my gosh. You know how you daydream about things, imagine a best-case scenario even though you know it won’t happen?”
“I sure do.”
“Well, today blew my dream scene out of the water. The place was packed all day long, and people carted plants and flowers and doodads out the door like I was giving them away.”
“Fantastic!”
“I’ve got orders, actual orders. And my family came,” she squealed. “My mom and dad, my brother, his wife, and their two kids. They’re stayin’ for the weekend.”
“I heard.”
“You did?”
“Cole told me.”
“Oh, of course.”
For an instant, her heart pinched. Her mom and dad. Her brother Rogan and his wife. Jenni Beth and Cole. It would be nice to be half of a couple. To have someone to share life with. To be that other half for somebody else.
Her rogue mind flashed to Sam. No, he definitely wasn’t a sharer.
He was last night, her good angel whispered.
Her bad angel reared up. Don’t count on it ever happening again.
“You okay?” Jenni Beth asked.
“Yes. Absolutely.” Cricket shrugged off thoughts of Sam and the longing for someone special in her life. She made a feeble attempt at a laugh. “Cole was here when the family arrived, and I turned into a crazy woman.”
Jenni Beth chuckled. “That’s not quite how he put it, but he did say you were incredibly happy and that you’ve got a great family.”
“I do. I’m so lucky. What did Susan think of the pink purse bouquets?”
“I almost had to tranq her!” Jenni Beth laughed. “And when we announced we were giving them away as game prizes, the competition became cutthroat.”
Cricket breathed a huge sigh of relief.
“Speaking of flowers, I have a new client for you.” Jenni Beth paused. “One of Susan’s newly engaged friends would like you to handle everything. The wedding, rehearsal dinner, the whole shebang.”
“Seriously?”
“Yes. I’ll fill you in later, though. Go enjoy that family—and get off your feet.”
“I will. Again, thanks so much.”
When she closed the door behind her this time, her feet no longer hurt.

Hands on his hips, Sam stepped back and eyed the front of the house. Better but not there yet. The steps, no longer rickety, were lined with potted plants Cricket helped him salvage from the yard. Working off the afternoon’s leftover anger and adrenaline, he’d anchored a tall, white post in the side yard and attached a birdhouse to the top of it. The house looked like a big old cat, its mouth wide-open. Sam doubted any self-respecting bird would roost in it, but who knew. It added a touch of whimsy to the yard, and he liked it. The piece looked like something Cricket would choose.
Speaking of Cricket, he still hadn’t decided how much he’d tell her about what had gone down with Carter Scott.
